Definition
Hip pain can be caused by many problems. Pain on the inside of the hip or the groin is usually caused by problems within the hip joint itself. Pain on the outside of the hip, upper thigh or outer buttock is usually caused by problems with muscles, tendons or ligaments.

Causes
• Arthritis can cause symptoms like pain, swelling and stiffness. Types; osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis.
• Bursitis is a painful swelling in a small, fluid filled sac called bursa which is a cushion space around bones. Types; trochanteric bursitis and iliopectineal bursitis.
• Injuries that damage any parts of the hip joint can cause pain. Types; sports injury, car accidents, falls, repetitive strain injuries.
• Avascular necrosis (osteonecrosis) is the death of bone due to lack of blood supply. Trauma, fatty deposits and blood vessels, diseases like sickle cell anemia.

Diagnosis and treatment
• Evaluation by a specialist who may obtain X ray or MRI.
• Conservative treatment; at home using the RICE method: Rest- Ice-compression and elevation.
• Steroid injections, PRP injections, nerve blocks followed by RFA or orthopedic consult for hip replacement.
